Lose Weight – Why Healthy Food Makes You Lose Weight

Most people who have a healthy eating regime, mostly unprocessed foods, including raw fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes (peas, beans, lentils, etc), and white meats and poultry often find that they can eat as much as they want without gaining a lot of weight.

When switching from a diet containing lots of processed foods, to a more healthy eating program, dieters find that they can eat more yet consume fewer calories — and they lose weight.

Because natural fruits, vegetables and whole grains are high in complex carbohydrates and fibre, they are absorbed slowly and satisfy our feelings of hunger, hence we snack less in between meals.

Conversely heavily processed foods, are not only low in nutritional value, and they don’t make us feel satisfied, so we tend to eat more of them, thus we pile on the weight. They tend to be made from refined ingredients that are so tasteless they require large amounts of salt, sugar, fat, to make them taste better.

Perhaps the cardinal nutritional sin is turning away from foods in their natural state and replacing them them with processed foods that have been modified to last longer, be easier to manufacture and cook.

Heavily processed foods are extremely less nutritious and contain much of what is unhealthy for our bodies, including sodium (salt), preservatives, sugars, saturated fats and dangerous trans fats. Because of their lack of nutritional content and lack of fibre, plus all their additives, heavily processed foods can be very unhealthy for us and help us gain weight.

In order to lose weight, eat healthy, natural foods with a high ratio of nutrients to calories and you will not only lose weight – you will not go hungry either. You will be healthier, too. And don’t forget:

Natural foods are nutritious and contain much of what is good for us, including vitamins and minerals, fibre, and cancer-fighting antioxidants.  They reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Because of their nutrient and fibre content, natural foods also help keep us slim.
